Brainwave Technology:
Can we speed up the process of enlightenment?
Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D. is a Harvard-trained and published neuroanatomist, who keynotes, Indiana University School of Medicine’s Medical Sciences Program. Dr. Taylor had a stroke which effected the linear, language and logic hemisphere of the brain. The intuitive right side of the brain was left intact, to watch as the other side went dark. This led Dr. Taylor to experience a profound sense of bliss and oneness with everything.
Spontaneous Enlightenment
Eckhart Tolle had a spontaneous experience which led to freedom from suffering and a sense of peace and joy that never left him.
This happened only after years of suffering and anguish which forced him to the edge. Salvation came only just before Tolle decided to commit suicide. Tolle describes an incredible state of stillness. His thoughts have subsided by about 80%. He still uses the left-brain, logic-functions when needed; in fact they work much better than before; but he is no longer plagued by compulsive, unrelenting, thought forms that drain him of energy with their worry and judgment of everything.
Good For Tolle and Taylor but what about the rest of us?
Many mediators have reached a state of peace after 20 or 30 years of sitting…But can we wait that long?
And wouldn’t it be nice to get there without attempting suicide or having a massive stroke?
- B. Allan Wallace lays out a plan for becoming more free in his book Attention Revolution
- Vipassana Mediation courses are free for ten day retreats, and start you on the path
- Transendental meditation gives us a formula for more relaxation
- the Kadampa Budhist tradition makes the teaching available to westerners
- Taylor and Tolle have given us a wealth of material in their books
- There are many longer retreats if you have the time and money to do them.
… but is there something more we can do to aid in this process?
With the speeding up of human misery and planetary strife at this time, we need to get some of “dat” right now!
Using binaural beats to quiet the mind
Bill Harris, a long time meditator, and one of the teachers from the movie, The Secret, has done years of research and come up with the most comprehensive program for mediation using binaural beats that I have seen. There are thousands of programs out there. You may know of other programs that I know of. There are 12 levels and it is tailored to each individual with your own recorded subliminal affirmations.
Silva Mind Control was developed by Jose Silva, a humble electronics repair man, to help his children learn faster. It became a powerful tool for visualization and healing with a following around the world. This technique uses the “alpha sound” instead of binaural beats but seems to be very relaxing and effective for retraining the mind.
The Science
The scientific evidence for the connection between the brainwave states and levels of consciousness is extensive. But meditation and enlightened states of consciousness are still seen as airy fairy, improvable states by most people. With the mounting scientific evidence it is getting to be pretty hard to deny that something monumental is going on with human consciousness.
With the trappings of eastern religion, incense, chanting, ritual and religion it can be hard for rational thinkers to take this new state of being seriously. But let us try to untangle ourselves from the many labels and take a look at what is really going on.
Why aren’t more meditation and spiritual teachers acknowledging this information?
What Are Binaural Beats?
Binaural beats were originally discovered in 1839 by physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove.Research has proven that introducing a binaural beat will cause the brain to begin resonating in tune with the frequency of that beat.
This is called the “Frequency Following Response” and was thoroughly researched and tested in 1973 by biophysicist Gerald Oster at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. His research on binaural beats and the frequency following response was published in Scientific American and paved the way for further development in the area of auditory stimulation to enhance brain functioning.
Since that time, binaural beat technology has been endorsed by scores of doctors and scientists around the world.
The documented brainwave states
Beta:13Hz to 40Hz, Normal waking state, could be called a left hemisphere dominant state
Alpha: 8 Hz to 12 relaxed mental awareness or reflection, contemplation, visualization, p
Theta:4Hz to 8 Hz. Light sleep, rem or dream sleep, contemplation and mediation.
Delta: 0Hz to 4Hz. Delta brainwaves are the slowest in frequency and represent a state of deep dreamless sleep. Delta brainwave states have long been associated with healing. 0Hz to 4Hz.
Gamma: 40Hz or higher. Gamma brainwave states are the most rapid in frequency. Research has indicated that gamma brainwaves occur at moments when bursts of insight or high-level information processing happens.
